Police have released surveillance images of a Bonnie and Clyde couple who sparked a mini-diplomatic incident after allegedly swiping electronics, booze and a set of diplomatic wheels from an Upper East Side consulate, officials said Tuesday.
The brazen break-in happened about 1:30 a.m. Monday at the the Indonesian Consulate on E. 68th St. near Fifth Ave., said Benny YP Siahaan, the acting consul general.
The couple hopped a fence onto the property and got into the building through an unlocked side door, according to police.
Once inside, they stole a case of vodka, a Samsung tablet, a suitcase full of clothes and the keys to a tan Honda Odyssey parked outside, Siahaan said. They drove off in the Odyssey with the loot.
“I’ve been here about three years, and nothing like this has happened. It’s random,” Siahaan said. “I feel very surprised and disturbed.”
Police learned of the theft at about 1:30 p.m. Monday.
They are asking the public’s help identifying and finding the suspect’s caught on video.
The suspects are described as Hispanic and between 18 and 25, police said. The man was last seen wearing gray sweatpants and dark colored sandals. The woman was wearing a black-and-white striped tank top, dark colored pants and white sneakers.
