My Dutch family lived in Asia and Europe. We emigrated to America in 1960. It was a terribly difficult time, but we worked hard to make the best of it. Graduating from college in 1968, I landed the job of a lifetime. At Fairchild, then Intel, in the early days of the semiconductor industry, I worked with brilliant people from all different countries: Hungarians, Italian, Israeli, English, Japanese, Chinese, German, Hispanic, French, American. I improved the world with my layout designs of RAMS, ROMS, the first 8-bit Microprocessor, the first LED, etc. My father worked on the first NMRI at Varian, my mother became the secretary of the president of Syntex. So you see, immigrants are not all stupid and lazy. Many speak several languages. I get offended when dumb people say horrible things about immigrants. How many languages do you speak and what have you done for this country?

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
